Make your way to Charlo, and as you cross the bridge, drive on a natural sandbar (now paved) with the unique feature of having fresh water on one side and salt water on the other. A beautiful beach with a boat ramp, beach volleyball court, and kayak and canoe rental. Another great place to paddle along the shoreline or walk along the beautiful beach.
Charlo, founded in 1799 and incorporated in 1966, holds the distinction of being one of the oldest settlements in Restigouche County. With a diverse population of 1,324 English and French speakers, representing Catholic and Protestant denominations, Charlo is a vibrant and welcoming community. Over the years, the residents of Charlo have collaborated to establish attractions and facilities that cater to both locals and visitors, creating a wonderful environment for all. Meanwhile, Dalhousie, the shiretown of Restigouche County since 1837, graces the picturesque Bay of Chaleur. Its history is intertwined with various cultures, beginning with Acadian settlers Louis and Joseph Arseneault in the late 18th century. Subsequent waves of immigration brought Scottish settlers from the Isle of Arran, including Captain John Hamilton and his fellow immigrants. In 1826, the town was named after George Ramsay, the ninth Earl of Dalhousie and Governor General of Upper and Lower Canada at the time. Dalhousie became an incorporated town in 1905. Before the establishment of the New Brunswick International Paper Company in 1929, the region thrived on industries such as logging, shipbuilding, fishing, shingle and lumber mills, and tourism. The construction of the Intercolonial Railway in the late 1800s revolutionized life in the area, connecting Dalhousie to a wider world and transforming it into a sought-after tourist destination. The magnificent Inch Arran House, built in 1884 alongside prominent landmarks like the Algonquin Hotel, Chateau Laurier, and Banff Springs Hotel, further cemented Dalhousie's reputation as a delightful vacation spot. Notably, Sir John A. and Lady Agnes Macdonald were among the distinguished guests who graced the halls of Inch Arran House. Both town and local service districts Dalhousie Junction, Point La Nim, areas of Blackland, New Mills, Benjamin River and Seaside embody the spirit of community collaboration and celebrate their unique histories with the amalgamation in 2022.
